Brandvlei is situated on the R27 provincial road that runs from Vredendal via Vanrhynsdorp, Calvinia, Brandvlei and Kenhardt to Keimoes.  The northern segment of the road is exceptionally desolate; it is a distance of 370 kilometres (230 mi) from Calvinia to Keimoes, and the only towns along the way are Brandvlei and Kenhardt. Brandvlei is a small town in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape, South Africa. This is where a 19th-century trekboer called Ou Brand settled.

Brandvlei is parth of the Hantam Local Municipality which is a Category B municipality situated within the Namakwa District in the Northern Cape Province. It is the largest municipality of six in the district, making up a third of its geographical area. It has its centre in Calvinia, which is approximately 400km from Cape Town, Springbok, Upington and Beaufort West. A 1 250m tarred runway, very close to Calvinia, is used by many visitors to this beautiful part of the Northern Cape. Numerous government departments are also situated in Calvinia.  The municipality provides work for more than 140 permanent employees. Seventy percent of the population live and work in the towns. Farming is the main contributor to the economy, namely sheep, wool and lucerne, as well as rooibos tea. The Hantam Municipality is well known for its wide open spaces, stunning mountain ranges, and nature reserves filled with an incredible array of plants and bulbs that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Cities/Towns close to Brandvlei are Calvinia, Loeriesfontein, Middelpos, Nieuwoudtville and Onderste Doorns.

The main economic activities are Agriculture and mining

This region contains very little vegetation, primarily very low shrubs and yellow grass among a rocky desert kind of landscape. If you travel north from Brandvlei towards Kenhardt, you will pass through a huge landscape of nothingness for the next 200 km and more. During the seasons many birds flock to the pans, when they contain water, after some rainfall. Temperature above 40 °C is not uncommon.
